Old Negatives, New Photos

Someone in our family loved to take photos of automobiles, and we have several extremely old negatives to prove it! Simply scanning one of the above negatives yielded this fabulous photo which looks great and hasn't been touched up at all. Most negatives and slides should be scanned at about 2400-3200dpi, and you need to use a "film scanner." These older, larger negatives can be scanned on the lower end of that dpi range, unless you want to crop something smaller from the image and enlarge it. Then you need to scan the negative at a higher resolution. I brightened this image a bit and that's it. Of course some of the negatives are damaged and would produce photos requiring more work. But all in all a negative or slide produces a much better picture than the scanned photo would. I can't begin to count all the people who have told me they have thrown out old negatives. Please, please, please do all you can to gather and preserve these incredible glimpses into the past. Be more specific when asking family members for their "old pictures" to restore. Ask them for their "OLD NEGATIVES," too, and hopefully you will soon be viewing old automobiles...and much more.
